Thanks for posting this, I haven't read anything specifically about Costa Rican indigenous communities, so I appreciate you posting this!
One of the many issues that fascinates me about US dominant culture is how Native American cultures or indigenous peoples are considered to stop at the US-Mexican border. The most prevalent explanation I hear is that Spaniards intermarried with the locals so much that people below the US/Mexican border are not considered indigenous, which is obviously not true. Yes there was a lot of intermarriage, yet your link and other info show that there are still indigenous communities south of our borders.
You originally wanted to compare some specific Native American communities and how they lived prior to European contact and how they live now. You could do that with the Costa Rican communities, or you could also compare between specific tribes in the US with specific tribes in Costa Rica. Even just starting with tracing the laws and economic issues would be a way to approach the project.
Yup. The history of indigenous people in South and North America is devastating. we all went through the same turmoil. But our peoples spirit cannot be killed.
